We provided reusable mugs for all employees to reduce single-use items and partnered with the Office for Campus Sustainability and Innovation and Planet Blue to bring composting to kitchen hubs throughout the school. We have also hosted Lunch and Learns on solar panels, electric vehicles, buying local, and simple ways to be more sustainable at home. We have also helped promote the Ann Arbor Zero Waste Challenge. Most recently, we have been working with Ross Catering and Ross event planners to send out announcements to reduce food waste after events.

Why do you feel it is important for Ross and the university to prioritize sustainability practices? What benefits do you see for Ross and the broader U-M community?

Ross is committed to building a better world through business, and prioritizing sustainability practices is an important part of that mission. Sustainability affects everyone in our community, and it gives Ross and the university an opportunity to lead by example by caring for the environment and helping leave it better for future generations.

Practical efforts such as reducing food waste, increasing composting, reducing single-use items, and raising awareness about sustainability at work and at home can make a meaningful difference. By taking action within the Michigan Ross community, we contribute to broader environmental goals and demonstrate the kind of leadership we hope to see in the business world. These efforts also support the University of Michigan’s goal of achieving campus carbon neutrality by 2040.

What university resources or events related to sustainability have you used or participated in?

We have participated in a variety of sustainability-related resources and events, including programming offered by the Office for Campus Sustainability and Planet Blue throughout the years. In addition, we participate in the annual A2ZERO events in June, which provide opportunities to connect with the broader Ann Arbor community on sustainability goals and initiatives.

What advice would you give colleagues who want to implement eco-friendly practices at work?

Join the Green Team! It is a great way to get involved, share ideas, and help promote eco-friendly practices across Ross. Interested folks should email RossGreen@umich.edu for more info.

Colleagues can also start with simple everyday actions, such as bringing reusable plates and utensils for meals instead of relying on disposable items. You might even keep a reusable towel at work to dry your dishes.

Other easy steps include thinking before you print, setting your printer defaults to double-sided and black-and-white, and turning off lights and monitors when you leave your workspace. As educators of future business leaders and innovators, we have an outsized impact on how sustainable businesses and society will be in the future. The benefit is that our students will be better adapted to the world they will inhabit as sustainability concerns continue to grow.

What university resources or events related to sustainability have you used or participated in?

So, so many! Many faculty are also involved in sustainability through their research and teaching, offering courses and producing scholarship on these topics. So while the day-to-day practices may be school-wide rather than department-specific, sustainability is also reflected in the academic work happening across Ross.

Why do you feel it is important for Ross and the university to prioritize sustainability practices? What benefits do you see for Ross and the broader U-M community?

Sustainability is a major challenge for the next generation – from climate change and species extinction to habitat destruction and freshwater availability. Our students will face these issues as future business leaders and as global citizens, so they want and need more education on these topics. Ross and the university should prioritize sustainability not only in the classroom, but also in practice. To be credible, we have to “walk the talk” and lead by example. The benefits are twofold: we reduce our own environmental impact, and we better prepare students to advance sustainability in the businesses and organizations they will lead after leaving Ross.

What university resources or events related to sustainability have you used or participated in?

For me, sustainability is woven into my academic work. I teach courses that introduce students to sustainability concepts, write papers that examine related challenges and opportunities, and help organize conferences that create space for dialogue and collaboration. These roles have allowed me to contribute to sustainability efforts by educating students, advancing research, and helping connect people who are working toward similar goals. It is also woven into my personal life, how I think and act regarding thoughtful and purposeful consumption, waste management, local awareness, and more. I believe that every step we take in our personal and professional lives opens our vision and awareness to new ways to have an impact.

What advice would you give colleagues who want to implement eco-friendly practices at work?

My advice is to take the initiative and recognize that meaningful sustainability work can come from every level of an organization. Eco-friendly practices are not only the result of top-down policies; they can also be driven from the bottom up by faculty, staff, and teams who see opportunities for change in their daily work. Start with practical steps, invite others into the conversation, and look for ways to scale those efforts.

At Michigan Ross, sustainability is both a shared responsibility and an opportunity to lead by example.
