The following will detail how to install and use the Virtual Lab Client on an iPad. It is highly recommended you use your iPad’s WiFi connection for this purpose. Using a 3G network may result in a lot of data usage and may put you close to your service provider’s monthly data cap, if applicable.

\n\tDownload and Install the App<\/h2>\n

Using the iTunes store on either your computer or your iPad, search for and install the free “VMware View for iPad” App.  (Click here<\/a> to open the iTunes store on your computer. You must have iTunes installed.)<\/p>\n

If you download the App using iTunes on your computer, be sure to sync your iPad so that the App can install before proceeding with the steps below.
\n <\/p>\n

\n\tRunning the Virtual Lab Client<\/h2>\n

1)  On your iPad, open the “VMware View” App.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t2)  After opening, tap the “Add Server” button.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t3)  Type vlab.bus.umich.edu into the box and tap the “Connect” button.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t4)  Type your uniqname and UM password, and ensure UMROOT is the domain, then tap “Done.”<\/p>\n

\n\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t5)  Tap on “Ross Virual Lab” to connect and wait a moment.<\/p>\n

6)  When you’re connected, you will soon see a guide detailing gesture shortcuts. Scroll to see more gestures, and when you’re done, tap “Done.” (This window can be seen again from the VMware View dropdown menu under “Help.”)<\/p>\n

\t7)  You’ll see a “NOTICE” screen, simply read through it and tap “OK.” You’re now connected to a virtual lab machine!<\/p>\n

8)  The VMware View dropdown menu is available by tapping the tab circled in yellow, below. From this menu you can change settings such as screen resolution, turn on a digital keyboard, and disconnect from the session.<\/p>\n

\n\tThings to Remember<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • \n\t\tThough you are using an iPad to access the virtual machine, the virtual machine itself is a fully functional Windows computer.<\/li>\n
  • \n\t\tIt’s probably easiest to position the iPad in landscape mode (held sideways) to maximize screen real estate.<\/li>\n
  • \n\t\tPressing the “Home” button on the iPad to take you back to the main menu will not <\/strong>immediately disconnect the VMware View session, however, it will time out and disconnect eventually.<\/li>\n
  • \n\t\tThis is a “virtualized” computer that you’re using. It does not have a true physical component and is a means to use software that you may not have a personal license to.<\/li>\n
  • \n\t\tEach time you connect using the Virtual Lab software, you may not be connected to the same “virtual” computer.<\/li>\n
  • \n\t\tTherefore, be careful when saving documents and files. Do not save them directly to the computer itself. We recommend using your network space or a cloud-based storage service like Box so that you can easily retrieve your files later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
