The Building Incident Response Team (BIRT) was developed by the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security<\/a> to coordinate emergency responses<\/strong> within the different University of Michigan buildings, closing any gaps related to communication<\/strong>, coordination<\/strong>, and chain of command<\/strong>. The Ross School of Business Department of Operations<\/strong> oversees the safety and security of the Michigan Ross complex and is working to implement BIRT at Michigan Ross<\/strong>. Spearheaded by liaisons Laverne Wise<\/strong> (Building Manager) and Shannon Crawford<\/strong> (Maintenance Supervisor), the program relies on the help of volunteers who are familiar with their workplaces and want to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIRT team members are not expected to put themselves in danger<\/strong> and will receive comprehensive training<\/strong> to manage a wide variety of emergency incidents. They are mainly expected to be familiar with their building\u2019s evacuation procedure<\/strong>, interface with BIRT liaisons and first responders<\/strong>, and maintain a calm demeanor<\/strong>. In addition, the University of Michigan offers general liability insurance coverage for volunteers acting within their duties and the scope of their training and ability.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
