BIRT at Michigan Ross: Volunteers Needed
The Building Incident Response Team (BIRT) was developed by the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security to coordinate emergency responses within the different University of Michigan buildings, closing any gaps related to communication, coordination, and chain of command. The Ross School of Business Department of Operations oversees the safety and security of the Michigan Ross complex and is working to implement BIRT at Michigan Ross. Spearheaded by liaisons Laverne Wise (Building Manager) and Shannon Crawford (Maintenance Supervisor), the program relies on the help of volunteers who are familiar with their workplaces and want to make a difference.

Help lead our community safety response!
Please fill out our online form to express your interest. All staff and/or faculty from Michigan Ross can participate.
BIRT team members are not expected to put themselves in danger and will receive comprehensive training to manage a wide variety of emergency incidents. They are mainly expected to be familiar with their building’s evacuation procedure, interface with BIRT liaisons and first responders, and maintain a calm demeanor. In addition, the University of Michigan offers general liability insurance coverage for volunteers acting within their duties and the scope of their training and ability.
